Let's Fix the Skins Game

A lot of talk goes on these days about things that need improving - the economy, the FedEx Cup, India-Pakistan relations are a few.  Really, though, it seems like the Skins Game is in a bit of trouble.  I love the Skins game format.  When played without the validation component, it is one of the most fun formats in golf to watch.

As the event kicked off almost 30 years ago, the event was also surprisingly rich for a silly season round of golf.  Featuring a seven figure purse - rare in those days - it allowed four of the modern greats to have some fun, interact with the fans and one another, and give golf some of the spotlight.

Today, we don't really have modern greats, save for Phil Mickelson.  We have three very good and successful golfers plus Phil Mickelson vying for a title that seems to have been lost in the golf landscape.

So, what can be done to bring the Skins Game back to its former glory and prominence?  It's a question that I'm not sure that I can answer.

Star-divide

How about some suggestions to bat around amongst ourselves?

1.  More prize money always seems to be the first suggestion to solve any golf problem.  It is scientific fact that if you throw money at any problem, it automatically gets fixed.  Look at the Baltimore school system.  Still, it's not likely that LG is going to pony up millions more to make the worth of the Skins Game more comiserate with other PGA Tour events.  That would require about a $5 million purse with a $1 million last hole.  And we all know how Tour players feel about a free-for-all.

2.  If more money won't work, how about modifying the Skins Game so that it is more like the World Series of Golf.  The format for that event is more like Texas Hold Em poker than a Skins.  Throughout the day, each player cycles in and out as the main bettor for the hole.  Players could be given one fourth of the purse each to start and just keep betting until we get a million dollar winner.  It's a fun format and could appeal to "risk takers" like Phil Mickelson.

Again, though, we know how PGA Tour players feel about participating in limited-field, silly season events.  They want some guaranteed money.  We would likely have to guarantee $100,000 just for coming.  But it's a small price to pay.

3.  If all else fails, why not merge the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and the Skins Game?  Both events are struggling for relevance.  The points scale to get into the Grand Slam of Golf is more antiquated than a musket.  The Skins Game format gets less attention than Rosie Live.  Combine the two - four major winners and the Skins format - and you would probably get as much attention as that guy who gets a cannonball shot at his stomach.

So, what say you?  Does the Skins Game need fixing?  How?

yeah yeah yeah...

…Mickelson and three also rans…whatever…I guess the WINNER was one of those non-entities. :-)

Money doesn’t get people’s attention – you’d think these companies would figure it out since the Fed Ex Cup hasn’t had people salivating over the last 2 years.

What does “relevance” have to do with anything ? Neither one of these events is claiming any sort of “relevance” outside of an opportunity to put 4 great golfers on TV. That’s a word that has nothing to do with the issue.

The Skins Game is a FOR FUN 18 hole skin game…except that these guys aren’t playing for their own money like you and I would be. They aren’t trying to make it into anything spectacular or earth shattering in “significance.”

The reason it was so popular in the early days was the cast. People loved tuning in to see Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino, Player, Norman….whoever….go head to head while wisecracking their way around the course. Very few players today have any kind of personality to be entertaining. All that fun has been drummed out of them by the likes of Bob Rotella. Occassionally, someone like Rocco Mediate pops up and gets the ball rolling, and Mickelson will try to get a laugh out of KJ Choi – but it doesn’t happen much with the big names of the game.

I wasn’t a big fan of the validation – but it did throw a different element in. Doesn’t hurt. The only format change I see that would make any kind of difference would be four guys putting up $100k, or $250k, or even $500k of their own money to get in. Let’s see who the real money players are. Who likes to gamble ? These guys play for paychecks, but they really don’t have anything on the line.

Someone tried this last year with poker players putting up tons of money. They got some viewers, but the golf was so bad, it wasn’t worth watching.

I did see that

I think the WSOG format is kind of fun. It would be great with pro golfers.

I like the skins game

I don’t think I’d bother to change it. Having the players put up the money like a buy-in might be interesting. Other than that, it’s a fun event and there’s not much point in trying to make it into something more.

Part of me is just nostalgic

I’d almost rather watch the old, classic Skins games on replay.

Yeah, me too

The old skins games were great. The field could be chosen a little better today, but it’s still fun. Besides, “the old days” always seem better than they were at the time.

just to let everyone know...

RB – just what years of The Skins Game you considering “nostalgic” ? The Sorenstam years ? :-)

Picking personalities...

is probably where I’d think about changing it up – I liked the idea of having the 4 major winners play skins, but I think more importantly it’s about having players that embrace the format and the idea of entertaining the crowd/tv audience. But I suppose some players just don’t want to commit in their “off season”. I enjoyed what I watched of it yesterday.

Very true

Skins is a LOT better when you have four fun and successful pros playing golf. In lieu of both, I would pick successful, but I can see why someone would pick fun.

one name you won't see...

…at least not anytime soon – is Tiger Woods. With this knee injury and him moving into his “prime years” – I doubt he’s going to be willing to play much friendly golf with the guys he wants to keep firmly under his spikes. I’m with you, though – it would be fun to see the major winners play skins.
