Tiger Woods and GM to End Relationship
In watching the testimony given by the chairs of the automotive Big Three on Capitol Hill last week - and hearing them chastised for showing up to DC aboard private jets - it was only a matter of time before the autos began their sports marketing pull out. Among the victims is the world's most recognized athlete. General Motors announced today that is was ending its nine year relationship with Tiger Woods.
I believe the Orlando Sentinel shares my sentiments on how this whole thing happened.
GM’s vice president for North American sales, Mark LaNeve, says the separation is the result of discussions earlier in the year and is not related to the company’s campaign for $25 billion in loans from the federal government, The Associated Press reports.
Yeah right.

at least GM...
…dumped one of their four corporate jets, too. You had to see this coming. Even TIger can’t sell enough Buick’s to make it worthwhile – much less put the entire GM line on his back.

Oh I agree
This was inevitable. It’s just the first of the sports related sponsorships that caught my attention other than that GM would not have a single Superbowl ad this year.

how many?
Has anyone over the age of 15 been silly enough to buy anything because of a celebrity endorsement? No matter how many rounds of 62 JD shoots, I have no intention of going to Hooter’s.

seriously ???
people of all ages, races, creeds, colors, and genders do it every day. what clubs are in your bag ? what ball do you play ? got a favorite clothing manufacturer ? if celebrity endorsements didn’t have a proven track record, companies wouldn’t spend the money.

beside the point
There are a limited number of club and ball manufacturers so some celebrity golfer is certain to have an endorsement contract with whichever brands I choose. I bought a new set of irons at the beginning of last year. I went to my local Golf Galaxy and was fitted by the pro from whom I’d had a few lessons. We went through 4 or 5 brands that fit my swing and my price range. We settled on Nike Ignites because they felt right. Although the clubs have a Nike logo, they are not the clubs Tiger or Suzanne or any other Tour player Nike has under contract hits.
No matter which brand of almost anything you buy, the manufacturer will have some celebrity under contract for advertising purposes. You may in fact purchase one of those brands. Please tell me your choice isn’t because of the celebrity.
