Google has digitized Life Magazine's images and put it on their images site. Geoff Shackelford explored many of the golf images and there are some stunning pictures that capture golf history. Worth a bookmark.

nope

he bought the land and built the course – but only played in the tournament a handful of times. he retired from competitive golf in 1930 and started his law practice. by 1934 when the first invitational was played, he was just a recreational player.
