Golf Digest/US Open Challenge Essay Contest
Remember how, last year, there was one amateur and a slew of celebrities that tried to break 100 at Torrey Pines as would be set up by the USGA for the US Open? It was Tony Romo (84), now-Callaway-sponsored Justin Timberlake (98), and Matt Lauer (100) playing with contest winner John Atkinson (114).
They're bringing it back - this time at Bethpage Black - in my opinion, ostensibly harder than Torrey.
This time, though, the essay is very simple.
We're giving you another chance, and this time you'll have to convince us in exactly six words why you should be the average American golfer who gets to play in the second Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge next June.
We'll read every six-word entry, just as we did the 56,374 essays last time, but we're also encouraging entrants to submit a very short video (60 seconds or less) to further detail the six-word essay. Instructions on how to submit videos can be found on the contest website.
So, borrowing from Geoff Shackelford's suggestions - or just going out on your own - give me six words as to why you should win the contest. They can be funny, legitimate (what you might really enter), irreverent, whatever.

I don't see it...
…what happened to the 10 handicap idea ? It’s not in the story, not on the information page, and the entry information page has an asterisk on the handicap line that reads “optional”. Hmmm.

My 6 words
“Because I’ll tear the mother down”.
Assuming, of course that they give me the contraction “I’ll” as one word.

Here's a good reason to get your entry in early..
Michael Jordan has played with Tiger Woods in a pro-am at the Wachovia Championship and competed in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. His toughest test might come next June at Bethpage Black in the days before the U.S. Open.
Jordan has agreed to take part in the “Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge,” according to an official involved in the event. He will join Justin Timberlake, another celebrity and one amateur who best explains in a 6-word essay why he or she can break 100.
U.S. Presidents Cup Captain Fred Couples reportedly will caddy for Jordan at Bethpage. Couples has said he wants the NBA great to be an assistant captain for the Americans when the Presidents Cup is played at Harding Park in Oct. 2009.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the celebrities have not been announced.
Woods was the only player to break par when the U.S. Open was held at Bethpage Black in 2002, winning by three shots.

high compliment...
…from a Terapin. :-)
Does “helluva golfer” put him above “can’t hit a curveball” level ? :-)
