Euro Tour v. PGA Tour: Game On?

As promised, here's the link to my Sports Central piece on what impact the European Tour - as now announced - will have on the PGA Tour.

I hope to hear from you on the events on both Tours that you think will be most impacted.

good stuff !

Did they really get rid of the name “order of merit” ? That would be a shame – I always liked that name instead of our plain old “money list”.

You have more faith in the US PGA guys than me. I don’t see them making the trip to England the day after The Players to play the BMW. Except for the Scottish Open the week before the British, I’m just not seeing many of these guys going overseas between the Masters and the Tour Championship.

(by the way – about all the Scottish Open does is get US players aclimated to the time change – they play this tournament on a parkland course – not a links course, so the US players don’t adjust to the style. They should be going to Ireland to play with Harrington in the Irish PGA on a links course !)

The Volvo is a short field, match play tournament – not always real popular with top players because of the volitility, and they will be depending on invitations. I hope you’re right – but this will also depend on scheduling for the Tour Championship and playoffs, and the Ryder/Presidents Cup events.

The Alfred Dunhill is a great event – but it is Europe’s version of Pebble Beach…without Bill Murray. People complain constantly about the 6+ hour rounds in that weather. Again, it will depend on scheduling for the Tour Championship and President’s Cup.

My best guess is that the top US players will play their regular PGA Tour schedule, then fill in the missing Euro Tour events from October to January, and after the Tour Championship.

Since the schedule changes for the Fed Ex Cup, there is either a Major or a WGC event every month from the Masters to the Tour Championship. Pond hopping to Europe may not work well with the American PGA Tour guys.

Agree for the most part

I’m not certain that either Volvo or Dunhill will get better because of exactly what you said. Same with the reasons for the Scottish.

Ferguson speculated that Mickelson would play the French Open and miss Tiger’s tournament. That’d be dumb.

Ferguson ?

Is that a name I shoud’ve heard somewhere ? (LOL) If Mickel-nuts skipped the AT&T on July 4th weekend to go to France – he would hear about it from his fans.
