What's the LPGA's Fifth Major?

I was reading Golf Girl's Diary tonight and noticed her post on Paula Creamer's win at the Samsung World Championship - adding to her fantastic season.  In the post, something struck me:

The Samsung World Championship is often called the LPGA's fifth major, which makes this Paula's biggest LPGA Tour victory yet, and it was made ultra sweet by the a hometown crowd cheering for their pink princess.

I didn't know that the Samsung had earned said title.  So, I have a couple of questions for my LPGA pros:

  1. Is the Samsung really thought of as the fifth major?  With a 20 person field?
  2. What do you consider to be the fifth major?

I would vote for the Evian Masters or the Michelob Ultra Open.  But, that's just me.

bingo

No event without a cut can be a major. Ever. So scratch Samsung. ADT championship has multiple cuts and high stakes, but it’s basically a cool gimmick, not a major. Evian is limited field, which is a strike against it, but at least they have a cut. (The HSBC stroke-play event could rival it someday, but not yet.) That leaves Michelob Ultra or Canadian Women’s Open (which is making a bid to improve its fields by raising its purse) as its top contenders. I’m rooting for the CWO, but I don’t think it can compete with Michelob Ultra or Evian just yet.

There is no fifth major

A Grand Slam is equal to four. If you make it five, what are we going to call it, the Royal Flush?

Back to serious mode, long established LPGA events(Not the ones used to sell real estate. As soon as that’s accomplished, the tournament vanishes) have had a nasty habit of going belly up. Look at tournaments in Youngstown, Tuscon, and now Phoenix.

no way

GG must have been reading some promotional material by IMG. Evian or Canadian would be much better choices for fifth major, if we needed one.

on the LPGA...

…they’re ALL “5th Majors”. It seems like every tournament has some player spouting that it “feels like a 5th major” – a line that makes me look crosseyed at the screen.

On the PGA Tour, majors have tradition and either a tie to a golf association, or the only man to have ever actually won a Grand Slam. On the LPGA, with the exception of the US Open, the majors are up for sale – which leaves open the possibility of adding more majors if someone ponies up enough cash – Kraft-Nabisco, McDonalds, and RICOH come before the actual championship.

Dog has a good point – Grand Slam was a baseball term before it was adopted for golf, then tennis – if you add a 5th major, what do you call it ? There are only 4 bases in baseball.

My question is this – what is the point of the discussion ? Is there some sort of need for a “5th major” ? Is it anything other than bored media people forcing an innane debate ?

Normally

When a sportswriter starts talking about some golf tournament being a tour’s 5th major, we know that person has run out of ideas for something to write about. In this instance it was a golf blogger, Golf Girl. Today was the first time I visited her blog, therefore I won’t make any guesses as to why she brought up the subject.

it wasn't orignial

GG wasn’t the first to say “5th major” connected to the Samsung. It get s said every year – and this year was no exception. Patricia isn’t a “golf expert” – she is a huge golf fan and enthusiast. She loves the game…and REALLY loves the fashion that goes with it – and she’s very good with her shopping skills. Give her a break on the “5th major” line – it was tossed out in enthusiasm.

You misunderstood me

I wasn’t criticizing GG. Golf bloggers can get bored, when that happens to me I look for some sportswriter writing about golf to criticize. GG likes to shop. We both have our preferences.

No modeling for me

I doubt there is one single person who would want to see me in the hospital gowns I wore for the better part of a month.

BTW

I don’t think that there’s really a 5th major on the LPGA Tour. But, if I had to name one, I’d add the CWO to the list of contenders, too.

oh well

I guess if we have to put up with The Players talk every year on the PGA Tour – the ladies might as well do the same thing.
