Paging Beth Ann Baldry

Shiho Oyama just got her 1st win of 2008 today on the JLPGA, moving her up to 7th place on their money list.  Maybe now Beth Ann Baldry will recognize that Mindy Kim has a lot more to worry about than being overshadowed by Vicky Hurst in the preseason Rookie of the Year buzz for the LPGA Class of 2009.  If all goes as expected at Q-School in December, it won't just be Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis that Kim has to contend with, but the JLPGA's Oyama and Miki Saiki (who finally cracked the top 20 on the JLPGA money list with her top 10 this week), the KLPGA's Sun-Ju Ahn, the LET's Martina Eberl, Melissa Reid, Tania Elosegui, and Beatriz Recari, and amateurs Alison Walshe, Anna Nordqvist, Mika Miyazato, and Dewi Claire Schreefel, as well.

And who was it who already got LPGA membership for 2009 with her Women's British Open win?  Her name is on the tip of my tongue!  She's on track to win her 3rd KLPGA major today...ranked in the top 5 in the world...finished 1-2-2-2 in her only JLPGA starts this season....  Oh well, it'll come to me!

Come on, Beth, I know you had a Futures Tour focus for your piece, but you'll enjoy life more with the blinders off!

[Update:  I knew the name would come to me!  Ji-Yai Shin just won her 3rd straight KLPGA major to get her 7th win in the season and 20th in her career on tour!  She only had to beat Sun-Ju Ahn and ROY #2 He Yong Choi in a playoff after they had chased her down with a 69 and a 64, respectively, to get it.]

say what ???

Con – you got more out of that Baldry piece than I did – though I do have to take up for her just a tiny bit. She only has a 750 word space and trying to include tours around the world in an article based in the Duramed Futures Tour is pretty tough.

That fluff piece sounded more like a shot at Vicky Hurst than anything. I would love to know what “celebrity” status Hurst was getting on the DFT. What recognition she got was similar to what Pressel and Creamer got as junior phenoms. Hurst’s problem was her age. She couldn’t go after the LPGA Tour at age 17 and she had pretty much outgrown the amateur juniors. She didn’t whine and complain – she just went to the DFT and started beating people there. (hmm – who could’ve learned from THAT lesson ? oh yeah – that 6’9" chick from Hawaii who hits the ball 485 yards off the tee)

What the heck was Baldry talking about when she made Mindy Kim sound like a griping teenager, saying that she was overlooked this year ? Once again – you’re on the DFT – NOBODY follows the DFT. Baldry didn’t even follow the DFT until Hurst closed out with another win last week. What the heck was Kim talking about when she said that people “underestimated how she played.” ??

Baldry wrote this article like the DFT was the hottest women’s tour on the planet. Unless you read the DFT website, there was almost no news about the tour – even about Vicky Hurst.

Con – you sure got more out of this than I did. She took a miscellaneous word in the opening – and we don’t know if the word “bogus” was actually connected to what she’s writing about. And the other sentence fragments were used to make Kim sound bitter. I just don’t get it.

a ridiculous piece, no doubt

I’m sure Mindy Kim won’t appreciate being portrayed this way, nor Vicky Hurst. Sure, including even half the names I mentioned would have undermined the premise of the entire piece—and that would have been a good thing. But I singled out Baldry because she’s a pretty reliable bellwether of how the US media’s going to cover Q-School in December—as if proven professionals from other tours and amateurs with lots of international experience don’t exist. By mentioning only Wie and Lewis—who have not yet qualified for the Class of 2009—Baldry unintentionally opened the door to all the other Q-School favorites. Hope she learns from her oversight and does her homework in the next month-plus.

"reliable" ??

hmmm…I was thinking more that she and Dougie Ferguson had been collaborating on articles lately. (ouch !) ;-)

Baldry does what most of the media does – lean on the “popular” names. Wie is a given, and Lewis was a fun and good story this year and people are pulling for them.

Outside of Japan, nobody has heard of the women you mentioned – they are just not in view, being halfway around the world on another “minor league” tour. (compared to the LPGA)

nobody heard of Stacy Lewis until recently...

…and Alison Walshe was her Curtis Cup teammate with just as distinguished an amateur career. That little “leading the U.S. Women’s Open” thing got her on the map fast. So why isn’t the Women’s British Open champion on the map already, outside of Seoul Sisters.com? We’ll see how minor league the JLPGA and KLPGA are compared to the LPGA the next 2 weeks!

ummm

do the words “cute” and “perky” help ? :-)

don’t forget – Michelle Wie didn’t play in the British – and as we all know – any event that doesn’t have Wie in the field doesn’t really count.

golfweek

Golfweek‘s target audience is male and in the US, most of whom couldn’t care less about female golfers not named Natalie Gulbis, much less those from Japan, Korea or even Europe. Badry wrote the article the person who signs her paycheck wanted her to write.

Dunno

Beth Ann wrote a piece on Hee Won Han last April. Articles on Korean Mom golfers don’t seem to have a big appeal. Or it could it have been due to me taking Beth Ann to task for leaving Hee Won off a list of golfers without a major championship and then saying she may have gotten the idea for the article from me.

It sure got Beth Ann’s attention. She and or Golfweek tried to get me blackballed with the LPGA. I don’t understand it, I didn’t give Beth Ann or her magazine the Knucklehead either. Ron Sirak,

This is where

having LPGA.com as its own news source would be very handy, particularly with TC as a lead writer! I know the LPGA reads this site, so just take me up on my suggestion!

by Ryan Ballengee on Oct 27, 2008 9:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

strictly a hobby, dude!

I do this for fun…and it would probably be a lot less fun to have to run ideas past the communications people at LPGA!

Haha

Fair enough. I’m still convinced that we could put together our own LPGA Tour news outlet with you, Bill, HD, and occasionally myself (because I’m not as knowledgeable) contributing news. HD has a great blog, you all make great contributions. If we made it more traditional, though, we could probably go places – and still keep it a hobby.

come on Con

It would be a pretty good paycheck, and you would get to travel to all the tournaments…start with Hawaii !

the only way I can get to Hawaii...

…is if there’s an academic conference going on at the same time where I can give a paper. Then I can apply for a few hundred in travel money—less than usual this year b/c of the SUNY budget crisis—to offset the thousands in costs. Wait, that doesn’t sound like fun at all!!

That's why...

…you get the job writing for Golfweek !!

no

If he writes for Golfweek he gets stuck with the same, “you’ll write what I pay you to write” restriction that Baldry has.

???

where are you getting the idea that BAB’s only writes what she is told to write ?

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Oct 27, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

"the man"

would be holding us down, so we would have to start our own media outlet. I don’t think Beth Ann gets told what to write, but she knows she is writing for a general golf audience. She tailors it to that audience and not LPGA ultra fans. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

by Ryan Ballengee on Oct 27, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what I meant to say

Ryan, you said it better than I did, “BAB” writes for a specific audience that isn’t us. She specializes in women’s golf and if the players are comfortable talking to her she’ll get a lot of information, but she’s going to filter what she gets through the slant of the magazine. If she doesn’t get it correct from a “corporate” perspective, she’s got an editor who will make sure it goes out the door the way the company wants it.

So, no, I don’t think she writes what she’s told, I think she writes what will keep her getting published. It’s self-censorship and we all engage in it.

by dianemarie on Oct 27, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I censor myself

Because I’m not an expert on many things. Golf patents are covered by David Dawsey. HD has the market cornered on LPGA issues. My Golf Spy has some cool previews of equipment before it comes to market – that’s a new one I found.

I must've missed something

D – help me out here. Where is this disgust for Golfweek coming from ? Golfweek covers just about every angle of golf – mostly American golf – Pro’s, amateurs, male and female, travel, business…… You’re probably right that most of their big articles cover men’s professional golf – but that’s where the majority of golfers and golf fans put their attention.

Why is it wrong for a magazine to tailor their magazine to their audience ? What is this “specific audience” that Baldy is writing for that isn’t you ?

that'll teach me...

I’m actually busy at work today, and I’m trying to squeeze in comments here. I’m apparently not doing so in an intelligible way.

I don’t have a problem with Golfweek or Beth Ann. I read the mag online pretty regularly and I seek out Baldry’s articles. Way up at the top of this thread, TC said the referenced piece didn’t include Asian golfers in 2009 ROY projections. I guess I had a roundabout way of saying that’s because Golfweek has an audience in mind, and as Ryan said, it’s not “LPGA ultra fans” (that would be us, right?). They are not going to use a lot of ink (electrons?) on Asian or European women’s tours, because as you point out, men’s professional golf is what their target demographic pays attention to.

I’m pleased they have a woman covering women’s golf. As Hound Dog is fond of saying, the LPGA is a niche sport. It’s a small niche and with the current state of the economy, it’s going to get smaller. But that doesn’t affect the number of women participating in golf at all levels any more than it does men. I’d like to see more quality writing about amateur and professional women’s golf in general interest publications.

Note: this post feels unfinished, but as I said, it’s a busy day. I’ve got to get back to it.

true enough

but he also pointed out that Baldry’s article was focused on the Duramed Futures Tour. That article wasn’t intended to deal with players from other tours from other parts of the world. She was saying that Vicky Hurst and Mindy Kim are going to be right in their fighting for that Rookie of the Year award with Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis (assuming they get their cards).

That piece was written by a writer who didn’t know a whole lot about her subject. BAB follows the LPGA first and foremost – so she took the top two names from the DFT money list and wrote about them.

Speaking for myself – the fact that BAB is a woman neither impresses me nor puts me off. I prefer someone who writes well and has some sort of clue about their subject matter. (which is more and more leaving Dougie Ferguson off the list) As long as someone gets their facts right and doesn’t just write attack pieces because ESPN and SI think that’s the way to write – I don’t think the players care about the gender of the writer.

By the way, Lisa Mickey does an excellent job writing about the DFT’s web site. I sat in on a couple of seconds of her Vicky Hurst interview. She’s pretty darn good, too.

Golfweek is the BEST there is at lots of things in the golfy media....

I’ve learned a lot about college golf and amateur golf (in the US) from them. I like their ranking system and make use of it. They even get around to posting scores from many international tours, even women’s ones. (Although Daniel Wexler does a better job all by himself on the men’s and most women’s tours.) Which makes their shortcomings even more disappointing. Lisa Mickey is light-years ahead of any golf writer I’ve read on women’s golf. Why is that?

it's her job...

…and she takes it seriously – AND seems to really enjoy it. A pretty good combination.

Lisa's advantages

Lisa Mickey is an employee of the FUTURES Tour. Prior to this year, she traveled with the players. The players know they can be open with her — she won’t turn on them for a story. Lisa is good with words and tells a good story.

As I am learning

by the range of people that contact me that I have never heard of before starting at Waggle Room, it seems that there are a variety of people happy to step in and fill the gaps in the major publications. Honestly, I spend more of my time reading non-MSGM (mainstream golf media ;) ) sites than the majors. I can pull AP copy from anywhere.

by Ryan Ballengee on Oct 28, 2008 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm missing the point...

…are you being contacted to write for these other outlets ?

Right now, there is a glut of “journalists” (word used loosely in most cases) who had been working for local newspapers on the market because the newspapers are losing subscribers left and right. It became more cost efficient to pull a story off the wires, regardless of how bad the story is written, than it is to pay their own people to go to events.

I mean

that there are a ton of sites that do a great job reporting on aspects of golf that aren’t really touched by the TGCs, Golfweeks, Golfworlds of the universe.

Although I won’t turn down an opportunity to write ;)

ah -

I’m up with you now.

A lot of those sites get overlooked because they don’t actually have people physically following the tours and players – they are excused as “opinion blogs” on the internet. Some correctly – but a lot really are good sources for information and ideas.

Definitely

I said on the old GNN Blog that to be able to write some wire game stories, all you needed was access to ASAP Sports or other transcript sites. The more opinionated and in-depth the story, the more having day to day access helps. But that doesn’t stop the flow of good ideas or information, for sure.

by Ryan Ballengee on Oct 28, 2008 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

On the inside of the ropes...

…we keep seeing more and more that having media people actually on site doesn’t necessarily guarantee getting the story right !
