Devil Ball Golf's PGA Tour Improvements
Jay Busbee at Yahoo! Sports' golf blog gave my All Star Game idea some love in his recent entry on ways to improve PGA Tour coverage and presentation. He has some great ideas of his own. My favorite ideas of his include:
- Providing fans with a real tour of the course and the town in which they're playing that week. It's hokey, but I love when Todd Blackledge does his Taste of the Town during his college football games with the otherwise insufferable Mike Patrick.
- Definitely the promotion of younger superstars. Tiger's absence provided a chance for the likes of Anthony Kim, Villegas, Boo Weekley, and others to become better known. the PGA Tour has gotta capitalize and keep promoting these guys, even when the Man in the Red Shirt comes back.
- And, obviously, the All Star Game, har har.
His commenters (-ors?) have some good ideas, too, including some mentioned here, like the Roy McAvoy Challenge. Whatcha think? Let's make a more interesting PGA Tour broadcast and tournament atmosphere!

not bad...
…but any plan that doesn’t start with “unplug Johnny Miller’s micropone” is incomplete. :-)
Personally, I really enjoy the Euro Tour broadcasts on xxx Golf Channel – (aside from not having Miller) – they always open the show with some sort of “travellogue” of the area they are playing in, and they have shorts throughout the broadcast with more local flavor.
Unfortunately, American TV starts and ends with negativism – so I keep wondering how a pleasant and enjoyable tour piece would be received.

If I got up earlier more often
I would watch the Euro Tour every week. Renton Laidlaw is, far and away, my fave play by play guy. And the local shots they always do are cool. C’mon, PGA Tour!

I know what you mean...
…those NINE O’CLOCK start times are pretty tough. :-D
I’m with you on Renton Laidlaw. He just seems to enjoy the game more than any of the American broadcasters. He fits the game more than the guys who think they have to disect every shot to figure out that these lunkhead professionals shouldn’t have hit their ball into the water – lord knows JOHNNY woudn’t have done that back in HIS day. :-D
