Annika Hedging More Against Retirement
Yeah, there may be no television coverage whatsoever of the 63 player Grand Air China LPGA this week, but the AP is a beacon in a troubled time. And they're reporting editorializing that Annika is sounding more and more like a woman who isn't ready to retire...at all.
"We'll see if I will come back in a few years to play," Sorenstam said Thursday, on the eve of the 54-hole Grand China Air tournament, the first LPGA event in China.
"As of now, I'm leaving the door open. ... That's why I'm not using the 'R' word."
"If I get the urge to come back, I have a chance," Sorenstam said. "That's why I have never said this is the end. But we'll see.
"There are new challenges ahead," she added. "Getting married and starting a family. Who knows? I might come out on tour sooner than later. It might be tougher than I think it is."
Hmm...3 wins this season is not a bad way to end, but perhaps she thinks it is still in her to do even better?

3 wins but...
…a lot of sub-Annika results, too. She did not have an overall good season. Maybe because of the retirement talk ?
I have never liked players in any sport who announce that they are retiring before the end of a season. They don’t seem to play very well – then they start hedging on the retirement talk. Just makes a mess out of everything.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
stepping away
Annika spent the year saying she is “stepping away” from the game. She never, ever used the “R” word. She is not hedging on retirement. She has some things she wants to do with her life and she feels that she can’t do them at the same time she is playing competitive golf at the level she expects of herself. When Carin Koch did the same thing, no one cared.
TINY difference there...
…good point on the words she used – but she never corrected anybody when they used the word “retire”.
just a little difference between Koch and Sorenstam, eh ? :)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
oh yes she did...
Obviously I haven’t seen every interview Annika has given since her step away announcement, but the couple I have seen where the interviewer used “retire” she has corrected him/her. She can’t be expected to write a letter to the editor of every print or online publication that has mis-characterized her intent.
Annika Sorenstam: Female, mid-30s, LPGA Tour player, born in Sweden.
Carin Koch: Female, mid-30s, LPGA Tour player, born in Sweden.
Not a lot of difference.
yeah...
…I guess those 72 LPGA + 17 international victories for Sorenstam (plus all those other countless awards) compared to Koch’s 2 LPGA wins is pretty insignificant a difference. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I know
But it kind of seemed like everyone was resigned to the idea that Annika might play the majors each year in like 3 or 4 years. Now it kind of sounds like Annika may be interested in more participation, a little sooner.

never bought that idea
I’ve heard that thought on the majors – but trying to play just the four toughest tournaments of the year doesn’t sound very reasonable – especially for someone who has such high standards for her play.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
she never opened that door
She was always adamant about stepping away 100% from competitive golf for at least a couple of years. The pre-tournament interviews on LPGA.com for the China event are consistent with that. At the same time, she’s also been consistent that she’s keeping the door open down the road. Haven’t seen the AP story, but it’s likely a writer unfamiliar with the LPGA repeating old news.

Lets hope....
Golf doesn’t become like boxing where they retire multiple times but it only becomes permanent when they start losing their marbles.
