Wagglers' Poll: Justin Timberlake and Vegas
By and large, it seems like the reaction of having Justin Timberlake's name and concert attached to the Vegas event is a positive one. I'm in line with that because I think the Vegas event was going nowhere fast. Add in that Vegas is one of the hardest hit cities in terms of tourism and foreclosures given the current economy, and this thing could have died without JT. Since I love Vegas and am looking to buy a cheapie condo there one day, I'm all for Timberlake.
Seriously, who didn't find Dick in a Box hilarious? And he's a single digit handicapper.
So, on this slow news day, what do you think of JT's involvement with the PGA Tour?

According to an article in the current Golf Digest, Timberlake and his family have purchased a course in Memphis and have plans to upgrade it with the intent of eventually moving the tournament there.
Read the interview
and I didn’t see anything about JT expressing intentions of moving the event to the course in Memphis. Besides, Stanford Financial might balk at that. :)

hmmm...
I could swear I read that. I don’t think I’ll have time tonight to re-read the article, but I’ll try to get to it over the weekend. I’ve been wrong before. 8-)
I read the article
…and my understanding was that the plans revolved on making the course a catalyst for tourism. I don’t think the tournament was explicitly mentioned (I can’t say with 100% certainty, though).
However, it’s not hard to make a speculative leap. It would make perfect sense, given all the pieces that are falling into place.

Nah, not hard to make the leap
But two events in Memphis?

Could be a stretch...
…but fall events seem miles apart from the mid-season St. Jude.
Of course there’s the longevity factor too. Is Timberlake going to be the next Bing Crosby or Bob Hope? If his event gets legs and hangs around for a while, then maybe it’s possible. If he loses interest, or the event doesn’t do well, then the point is moot anyway because one way or the other, it will wither away.

Bing or Bob ??
I’m afraid that the days of entertainers like Bing and Bob are long gone. Those two did movies that everybody enjoyed. They did radio that everybody enjoyed. Bing was a musical icon for most Americans back in his day.
There is no doubt that JT loves the game – but he doesn’t have the same universal appeal that Bing and Bob had. He made a lot of 13 year old girls “give it up” back in his star days, but how many of those girls are going to go to a golf tournament because of him ?
Bing and Bob involved not only the Tour, but dozens of other stars of their day. JT is a one man show.
I like that he’s willing and enthused about putting his name on a PGA tournament – but he’s a fad. I hope it does well, but I’m not going to hold my breath on it having a run like The Clambake or The Desert Classic.
