Around SBN: GoldenBlogs Interview With Gary Tyrrell Bar-right-arrows

BOOYA!

What a fantastic week.  And I'm not just referring to the delectable bowl of noodles I had with my assistant coach.  Although that in itself can pretty much brighten someone's day.

I finally got a new driver. A 9.5 degree Taylormade Burner that I've decided to name "Mac." (Ha Ha, get it? Burner/Bernie Mac?)I may call him Mac Daddy if he treats me well on the tee.

I got "the call" from the USGA.  They told me to keep it confidential until further notice, but I'm guessing by the Golfweek report, that further notice has been given.  And Yes, I WILL be sending the USGA a muffin basket.  Just not poppyseed--in case USGA officials start getting drug tested too.

And two weeks into the quarter, I've gotten my books for my classes...which is about three weeks earlier than usual. (Yes, I'm such an academic stud...studying seems so much easier when I get the books before midterms...what a concept!)

I'm anxiously counting down the days until I get to go "Down Unda'" with my good "mate" Alison Whitaker. Poor girl is sitting next to me the whole way from Los Angeles to Sydney. Luckily I'm bringing Jenga and maybe cheese puffs.

The only thing that could possibly bring me down is school work...Oh Sweet Nibblets! Which reminds me: Stats quiz tomorrow!

T-Joh OUT!

Can you taste the haggis already?

hey now...
don't knock the Haggis !  especially when served correctly - doused in several ounces of 12 year old Scotch.

No amount of Scotch ...
... is going to get me to eat organ-meat-and-oatmeal-stuffed-guts. And as someone who regularly gorges on Tex-Mex, you can have the tripas, too.

equipment question for TJoh...
How much of a custom setup do you get, or are you allowed to receive for your sticks ?  Do they make sure you get shafts that fit your swing ?  Take care of loft and lie and all that good stuff ?

good question
Was wondering that myself. But I believe that at least in some cases most of the big-time college programs get equipment donated by the big-time companies. Wonder what the NCAA rules on that are? Complicated, probably. Anyway, last year Tiff posted some pics of a UCLA team visit to the Scotty Cameron Studio: http://www.waggleroom.com/story/2007/4/7/41925/81361

In terms of our Weapons of mass destruction...
We actually can get pretty much whatever equipment we ask for.  While Taylormade provides us with any equipment we want free of charge(UCLA is an adidas school), if there's something else we want (e.g. ping, callaway, titleist) the program will usually pay for it, or many times (in the case of Ma-Jo and Titleist) the company will provide clubs for individual players for free through UCLA.
And, there's a clubfitter down in San Diego, Brad Hardan, who has done my clubs since I was a wee junior golfer, as well as Hannah Jun's, and Charlotte Mayorkas', and he's pretty much adopted the entire UCLA team in terms of lie/loft, shaft fitting etc.

links
Tiff, have you played true links golf (as opposed to a U.S. course with no trees that calls itself a links) before?

by Mulligan Stu on Jan 15, 2008 9:58 AM EST   0 recs

Links?
I've played golf while eating Sausage links before...and if we're not counting TigerWoods 2000, than NO.  I haven't played true links golf.  I figure it might play to my advantage...where else am I truly going to be able to play my low worm burner/skull shot and roll the ball up to the green?

ah allison
The chick who scandalized the USGA in 2005 with her belly baring shirts! Not that I notice things like that :)

Congrats to Stu
on your skilled prognostication re: Tiffany getting on the team...  and, oh, Tiff, congrats to you too!

I missed by one
I said Taylore Karle would be on the team, but she's first alternate. I think those extra E's cost her.

Tiger has the stinger, T-Joh has the...
you need a cool name for that "low worm burner/skull shot" that you can patent and have all the kids imitating a few years from now!

I got nothing.  The Kuromi Special is way too otaku, and doesn't get in any burnt worms, either....

the Sushi Roll
I can hear Johnny Miller now, at the U.S. Women's Open, "Tiffany will probably take out her 3-wood and hit one of her patented Sushi Rolls ..."

sushi roll?
is that some kind of racial connotation? am i going to have to tilghman your butt? hahaha jk

by TiffJoh on Jan 16, 2008 10:03 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

No!
I just know you like sushi. Had I been going for the racial angle, I would've gone with "Kimchi Pot." Because kimchi pots - like some of your wormburners - are buried in the ground. haha I learned that from MASH. Um, about the kimchi, not about the wormburners ...

personally...
...I call mine "death on a stick" - worms keep their heads low, and my scores stink to high heaven when that shot appears.
