A Report from East Lake
Waggle Room member "courtgolf" spent some time at East Lake Golf Club today and posted a report in comments. I'm lifting his comments up to the homepage to give them more notice. Here's what he saw at the site of the Tour Championship:
Just spent the afternoon at East Lake - the greens are not bad. #'s 2 and 13 are in the worst condition, but most of the green area is puttable - so pin positions will be kept away from the bad areas. #2 was resodded in some areas over the weekend and the seams are barely visible today. Only the bottom half of that green is used for pin positions anyway since the top half is severely sloped.
Other greens have been rolled and appear very smooth. Mowing has been minimal.
Spoke with PGA Tour Rules Official Mark Russell - he is optimistic that the greens will continue to heal, though they will probably only roll between 9 and 9.5.
Ernie Els was very pleased after his practice round today and he plans to give a very favorable review on The Golf Channel tonight.
Adam Scott did not play, but had a walkabout (that's about all of my Australian...that and vegamite) and says that the greens are not nearly as bad as had been reported by a few media members who were not on site when they did their reports.
We are expecting rain through Friday, at least afternoon showers, and cooler temperatures.
A SportsTicker article earlier in the day quoted Padraig Harrington saying he was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the greens:
It might be an exaggeration to say Harrington was pleasantly surprised but let's put it this way, they were not as bad as he expected.
"It's not the first time I've played on greens like this. They're a lot better than I thought," said the British Open champion ...
