Masters Predictions - What the Writers Say

As we did yesterday with bloggers' predictions, today we offer 2007 Masters predictions from some of the magazine and newspaper beat writers who cover The Masters and the PGA Tour. My thanks to each of the writers listed here for his picks.

Jimmy Burch, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Geoff Ogilvy
  • Dark horse: Henrik Stenson

Hank Gola, New York Daily News
  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Charles Howell III
  • Dark horse: Aaron Baddeley

John Hawkins, Golf World
  • Winner: Vijay Singh
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: Geoff Ogilvy

Mike Johnson, Golf World
  • Winner: My pick is Vijay Singh. Since he won in 2000, Singh has finished lower than T-8 just once (T-18 in 2001). He has the length and the iron game, and his putting, when on, is good enough.
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: Don't know how much of a dark horse you would consider Henrik Stenson, but he's the other player I suspect will be in the mix.

Bill Nichols, Dallas Morning News
  • Winner: Paul Casey
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: Charles Howell III

Jack O'Leary, International Network of Golf
  • Winner: This, like many years in the past, should belong to Ernie Els. He should already have won two and if he doesn't win one soon will be this generation's Greg Norman. Ernie wins this year.
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: The dark horse is little-known South African Tim Clark who is rounding into shape quite well. He challenged for 63 holes last year and could again.

Richard Oliver, San Antonio Express-News
  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Phil Mickelson
  • Dark horse: Geoff Ogilvy

"An epic battle comes down to the final day - and a familiar result."

Lorne Rubenstein, The (Toronto) Globe and Mail

  • Winner: Aaron Baddeley
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: Paul Casey

Art Spander, Oakland Tribune
"It's virtually impossible to pick anyone except Tiger. So ..."
  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Vijay Singh
  • Dark horse: Henrik Stenson

Robert Thompson, National Post and Going for the Green
  • Winner: Trevor Immelman
  • Runner-up: Phil Mickelson
  • Dark horse: Gary Player. Oh, it isn't "Dark Knight"? Well then, how about Stephen Ames?

Glen Waggoner, Executive Editor, ESPN Books*
  • Winner: Tiger, of course. (The question's not whether but by how many.)
  • Runner-up: Vijay. (Two wins already this season, but No. 3 will have to come another week.)
  • Dark horse: Charles Howell III (Five Top 10ss in nine events says this hometown boy's ready to make good.)

(Editor's Note: Glen is the "with" - as in "John Daly with Glen Waggoner" - for the book, "My Life In and Out of the Rough: The Truth Behind All That Bull** You Think You Know About Me")
