Masters Predictions - What the Bloggers Say

I asked a few Waggle Room diarists and some of my fellow golf bloggers from around the Web for their 2007 Masters predictions. The results are a little surprising - not many bloggers are picking Tiger Woods to win.

There is no logical reason to pick anyone other than Tiger. But nobody ever accused golf bloggers of being logical. Or perhaps, like me, many of my friends in the golf blogosphere decided to make it more interesting with a conscious decision to avoid picking Tiger.

On Wednesday I'll be publishing the results of a similar poll of some of the top magazine and newspaper beat writers. Be sure to check back for those.

Mulligan Stu, Waggle Room

  • Winner: Geoff Ogilvy
  • Runner-up: Jose Maria Olazabal
  • Dark horse: J.J. Henry

Tiffany Joh, Waggle Room diarist
  • Winner: I say Tiger (duh)
  • Runner-up: Adam Scott. He's on fire going into Masters Week ... and his golf is pretty good too =) I feel a warm front moving into Aus-land ... I think it is time. Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi Oi Oi!
  • Dark horse: Sergio Garcia - if he can roll balls into holes as accurately as he can spit into them. Wow, coupled with his ballstriking magic, the sky's the limit ... Vamonos, El Nino!

Bogey McDuff, Waggle Room diarist and Texas Golf Blog
  • Winner: Retief Goosen
  • Runner-up: Vijay Singh
  • Dark horse: Chad Campbell. Gotta go with the Texan!

BobS, Waggle Room diarist and Golf Babes Blog
  • Winner: Phil Mickelson
  • Runner-up: Tiger Woods
  • Dark horse: Brett Wetterich

"I think Phil and Tiger will battle down the stretch on Sunday, but this time Phil comes out on top."

1ironcharlie, Waggle Room diarist

  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Phil Mickelson
  • Dark-horse: Jose Maria Olazabal

Miranda Allen, Even Par Round
  • Winner: Henrik Stenson
  • Runner-up: Paul Casey
  • Dark horse: Bernhard Langer

"Having made those predictions, I have single-handedly ensured that none of the those players will play well this week. I am a horrible jinx when I make predictions. I also think Steve Stricker and Vaughn Taylor might do well this week."

Tom Collins, The Reluctant Jam Boy

  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Henrik Stenson
  • Dark horse: Justin Rose

David Dawsey, Golf-Patents
  • Winner: Ernie Els
  • Runner-up: Jim Furyk
  • Dark horse: Craig Stadler

(Mulligan says: Now that's what I call a dark horse!)

Golf As You Wish

  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Paul Casey
  • Dark horse: Adam Scott

Armchair Golfer from Armchair Golf Blog
  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Vijay Singh
  • Dark horse: Luke Donald

Golf Grouch from Grouchy Golf
"I consulted my Ouija Board and came up with these picks."
  • Winner: Tiger Woods
  • Runner-up: Vijay Singh
  • Dark horse: Aaron Baddeley

Patricia Hannigan, Golf Girl's Diary
  • Winner: I'm going with Vijay. I just have a feeling about this, I think he's determined to get back to number one, and when Vij is determined, things happen.
  • Runner-up: Henrik Stenson. Because he's such big hitter and has had a really inspiring 2007. Mentally and physically, I feel he's in an ideal place to win this.
  • Dark horse: Sergio Garcia. His extraordinary talent combined with a post spitgate overhaul to his mental game, could result in green over yellow on Sergio.

"To be perfectly honest, I do harbor a feeling inside that it might come down to Tiger and Phil and that would be great ... but my money is on my three choices above."

JFB at My Daily Slice

  • Winner: Brett Wetterich
  • Runner-up: Charles Howell III
  • Dark horse: Troy Matteson

Larry, No Damn Three Putts
  • Winner: Phil Mickelson
  • Runnerup: Jose Maria Olazabal
  • Dark horse: Fred Couples and Bernhard Langer

"I can only hope Tiger misses the cut."

Noisemaker at GolfNoise.com

  • Winner: Ernie Els. He's got the juice if he can hang tough.
  • Runner-up: Phil Mickelson. Tough call but he shows a lot of well-deserved confidence around Augusta.
  • Dark horse: Charles Howell III. Needs to put his triple-A game together but has an outside chance if he can. Would love to see a fresh face sliding on the green jacket this year.

"Note: If Tiger's got his game on he's impossible yo beat but he's shown a few chinks in the armor lately (back side of Bay Hill) so I'm going with these."

Gary Potter, A Golf Blog

  • Winner: Jim Furyk
  • Runner-up: Chris DiMarco
  • Dark horse: Arron Baddeley

Anthony Renna, Better Golf with Fitness
  • Winner: Charles Howell III
  • Runner-up: Vijay Singh
  • Dark horse: Steve Stricker

Deep Rough
  • Winner: Ernie Els
  • Runner-up: Henrik Stenson
  • Dark horse: Vaughn Taylor

Stacy Solomon, Golf for Beginners
  • Winner: Tiger Woods. Isn't Tiger everyone's favorite? With wins at both the 2006 British Open and the PGA Championship, Woods is aiming for another four-in-a-row but won't be completely satisfied until he's taken all four majors in the same year.
  • Runner-up: Charles Howell III. Ranked second in the current FedEx Cup standings and fifth in the overall PGA Tour standings, Charles Howell III is poised to win big. With one win already this season, Howell is finally becoming more confident of his skills.
  • Dark horse: Vijay Singh. Don't believe for a minute that the current FedEx Cup leader hasn't been thinking, eating and dreaming of taking the wind out of the sails of both Woods and Mickelson. As long as his putter doesn't let him down, Vijay could be the dark horse of this year's Masters.

"The one golfer I hope wins back-to-back glory at Augusta? I'll be rooting for Phil Mickelson!"
