Morgan Pressel Last One Standing at Kraft Nabisco
Morgan Pressel likes to yell at her golf ball. She's also been known to cry on the course during play. Hey, give the kid a break, she's still not 19 yet.
Sunday, at the LPGA's first major - the Kraft Nabisco Championship - Pressel did plenty of yelling at her ball. And it worked, she shot 69.
And she cried on the course. But this time about 45 minutes after her round ended, when she realized she had just become a major champion.
The carnage that befell other golfers left her unscathed, and the youngest major championship winner in golf - men's or women's - in the modern era.
Pressel won with a score of 3-under par, a score she reached with a birdie on No. 18. At that point she was two strokes behind the leader, with several golfers still on the course tied with her or ahead of her.
Suzann Pettersen was at 6-under midway through the back nine, then went bogey-double bogey-bogey. Pettersen missed a birdie putt on the 18th green that would have tied Pressel.
Five-time major champion Se Ri Pak was at 5-under around the turn, but fell apart on the back nine and wound up with a 77. She bogeyed the last four holes in a row, and five of the last six. Paula Creamer began the day in prime position, but exploded with a 78.
Veteran Catriona Matthew reached No. 18 after Pressel had finished, at 3-under and with a putt for birdie. After two of the worst putts you've ever seen, Matthew had a 3-putt bogey and dropped to 2-under.
Brittany Lincicome was solid all day and reached No. 18 at 2-under. But after driving into the rough she was unable to go for the green in then two, then missed a birdie putt to tie Pressel.
Lorena Ochoa's tournament blew up on Saturday when she quadruple-bogeyed No. 17; Annika Sorenstam had her worst showing in a major in ages and was never a factor; and Michelle Wie wasn't even playing.
Add it all up, and Morgan Pressel gets her first career LPGA win, and it's a major.
No doubt it's the first of many wins - and many majors - to come for Pressel.
