Webb Wins Aussie, Gulbis Stumbles
No surprise: Karrie Webb is the winner of the Women's Australian Open, the biggest tournament for women Down Under. The tourney draws all the top Australian golfers, plus most of the best from the Ladies European Tour and a sizable contingent of Asian golfers.
This year, it also drew Brittany Lincicome and Natalie Gulbis, and Lincicome wound up tied for fifth.
Gulbis was paid an appearance fee to make the trip and was presented as the face of the tournament, the "glamour girl" whose presence was used to sell the event.
But she played terribly, finishing all the way back in a tie for 48th. And Gulbis even had a final round in the 80s. She shot 74-75-72-81 to finish at 14-over.
Not meaning to read anything into a single event. It's just surprising Gulbis didn't do better, given that this tournament's field was weaker than just about any typical LPGA Tour event.
But hey, she still looks great in a bikini, eh?
