Justin Timberlake Joins the PGA Tour

No, not as a player (or even a playa), but as a tournament host. Beginning next year, the PGA Tour's Las Vegas stop will be known as the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Hey, would I lie to you? (Don't answer that. See below.)

justin timberlake pga tour There have been many celebrities down through the years who have had their names attached to PGA Tour tournaments, and if that group of celebs can include Joe Garagiola and Andy Williams, then it sure as heck can include Justin.

The press release from the PGA Tour included this quote from Timberlake:

"I couldn't be more excited to host the upcoming 2008 Las Vegas tournament and to be involved with the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We will make sure to make this event unique and memorable,
and we will raise money for charity while participating in the greatest game ever played.  I thank the PGA TOUR and the Shriners Hospitals for Children this amazing opportunity. Raising money to better children's lives while playing golf? I can't think of a better way to pass the time."

The PGA Tour notes that part of Timberlake's duties will be playing in the Wednesday pro-am and performing in concert during tournament week.

This is a good fit. Justin is a crazy-avid golfer. The tournament is a Fall Series event and needs all the help it can get. There's no doubt Timberlake's involvement will bring in some fans who wouldn't ordinarly be interested in golf; there's no doubt his involvement should help raise more cash for the charity.

So good for the PGA Tour and Timberlake.

But you know (here's that lying part), Timberlake wasn't the first music star the PGA Tour considered as a tournament host. I've managed to secure a list of the celebs and tournament names the PGA Tour considered and then rejected. And here they are:

Top 10 Rejected Music-Star-Hosted PGA Tour Tournaments

  1. The Kanye at PGA West
  2. Dr. Dre's The Chronic Slice
  3. Go-Lo with J-Lo
  4. Toke 'Em If You Got 'Em Invitational hosted by Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg
  5. The Nuthin' but a Kenny G Thang
  6. Crank That Drive with Souljah Boy
  7. Flavor Flav's Home for Unwed Mothers Charity Classic
  8. Britney Open
  9. K-Fed's Home for Unclothed Mothers Charity Classic
And the No. 1 rejected PGA Tour music-star hosted tournament - because it just rang too true - is:

     1. Ol' Dirty Bastard Invitational

The Tour also considered giving another of its players hosting duties, but the problem with John Daly's Smokes and Cokes Pro-Am is that they'd have to play it at The Bitch Attacked Me With a Steak Knife Golf Club.

Why do I get the feeling that attending the Shriners just got a little more interesting ?

We've seen the galleries that follow Camilo Villegas - imagine the sights when Justin Timberlake is on hand !!!

Yeahh!
Whose great idea was it to get the PGA Tour and Shriners Hospitals together??  This is wonderful!!

With Justin Timberlake involved, there will be so much more attention given to the good services that the Shriners and their hospitals do with their free medical services for children.
